Data Protection

Data Protection Act - Online Privacy?
I am about to launch a website which has the ability for users to register an account and post information on a public forum. I however have just been reading through my GCSE revision guide in IT (yes, I am still at school) and I came accross a section regarding Data Protection and about Data Controllers. The information that is required to sign up includes: - Full name - Year of Birth - Their Requested Username - Their Password All passwords shall be encrypted using md5 industry standard encryption, but the real question is... is a name and year of birth personal information? And by keeping it am I classed as a data controller and do I need to register as a data controller? What about the forums? The site isn't a registered business, and I am still in school. I may however be making money from the website? Sorry if I am sounded idiotic, and I am sure I am worrying about something that is seriously out of my league but I just want to be sure? Sorry, forgot to add that I also require them to include an email address.

Can you help me put this in a simpler way? or is it ok the way it is?
The Data Protection Act is a set of strict rules and regulations to control and keep your personal information safe. Anyone collecting personal information must use the following eight common sense rules known as ?the data protection principles? : ?fairly and lawfully process it ?process it only for limited, specifically stated purposes ?use the information in a way that is adequate, relevant and not to extreme ?use the information accurately ?keep the information on file no longer than absolutely necessary ?process the information in accordance with your legal rights ?keep the information secure ?never transfer the information outside the UK without adequate protection All organisations collecting and using personal information are legally required to comply with these principles.
