Windows XP install disk wont install?
After getting a virus I wanted to reinstall windows XP on my laptop, however when I booted from my Windows XP install disk, the operating system loaded from the disk but before I could do anything, I got a bluescreen error message: --------------------------------Error message: A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters. Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable memory options such as catching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select advances setup options, and then select safe mode. Technical information: *** STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005,0xF748E0BF,0xF78DA208,0xF78D9F08) *** pci.sys ? Address F748E0BF base at F7487000, DateStamp 3b7d855c ------------------------------------ This seems to be a message for a windows installation rather than an install disk so I don?t know what to do. I deleted pci.sys, no effect. There ?is? enough disk space. This is an old install disk and a reasonably new laptop, so I don?t think the BIOS is too old and there weren?t any memory options in the BIOS to change. I originally got Windows XP on this laptop by taking the hard disk from my old broken laptop and putting it in my new laptop, unfortunately I can?t do this again as the old laptop doesn?t work. Any ideas how I can reinstall Windows? Could my install disk be out of date, as I got the same message with another new laptop, but not on a slightly older desktop. But though XP is old, surely it's not 'that' old? Hi Open Sauce, Thanks for the suggestion, however I got this error with two different laptop computers, each with different hard drives. So I don?t think it?s a hard drive issue as both hard drives seem to be working. Also the XP install disk seems to be okay as that still works on a desktop computer. Hi Ben, thanks for the extensive answer. Actually I did change the boot order and the computer did boot from the installation CD. I heard the CD drive buzzing around for ages as it booted from there. But thanks for the suggestion anyway. Also this laptop computer is much newer than the install disk. Could be a BIOS issue anyway?
