Windows Backup

Can I safely delete old back ups?
I'm using Windows 7. In the 'manage windows backup disk space,' I have backups going back to late 2010, My question is this can I safely remove these old backups and will it gain me more free space on my computer. As an example it tells me that from the 21 Nov. to the 28 Nov 2011 I have a backup of 1.65GB. If I delete that will I loose any files, or will I just gain 1.65 extra space. What is this facility anyway? Many thanks for your help and information

'Insert removable media' message won't go away!?
Every time I turn on my laptop, there's a small white flag at the bottom right, with a red cross through it which tells me I have an important maintenance message. The message says 'insert removable media (important). windows backup needs a CD/DVD or USB drive to continue'. I don't need to 'back-up' anything so how can I get rid of this message? I've gone into 'change action centre settings' & unticked the 'windows backup' box to no avail. What else can I do?

How to remove windows (dual-boot) and merge partitions?
Recently I've pretty much gotten a whole new rig, except my hard drive, that was intended to be put in the new rig so I could keep my files. Me (being quite forgetful) completely spaced things such as drivers from my old motherboard conflicting. So after blue screen after blue screen I remembered how my hard drive was partitioned from before. It had one partition (aprox. 16gbs.) dedicated to a windows backup partition. Now instead of using said back up to delete all my old files I made that into a usable partition to boot windows from, and use the other partition to keep personal files. However moving things from D: to C: gets annoying and quite a few programs and games seem to have issues with keeping data. So I thought I might be able to delete the D:\WINDOWS\ folder and then merge partitions. Well I can't delete windows, permissions we're set to TrustedInstaller so I changed it to my account with full control allowed. Then I tried again, and it said I didn't have permission from my own account, which confuses me. Now the main question is how can I remove windows and merge partitions? But I am open to other suggestions to fix this problem.
